I haven't really read British Police Procedurals/Mysteries so I was excited to have the opportunity to read this book. It's book 6 in a series, which I didn't realize, but I did okay with keeping up with the different characters. It definitely reminded me of some of the British detective tv series I've watched (apparently the character does have a tv show called Prime Suspect).
This book is set in the early 80's, before Jane Tennison becomes a strong and capable detective. The story plods along at times with a lot of info and not much action. Jane seems tentative at times...as she would be considering she's at a new station with an already established pecking order. But then she had many times when you can see she'll be brilliant at her job.
The mystery was interesting and held my attention for the most part. I haven't decided if I'll go back and check out the other books in the series, but I might.
