Jane Tennison returns in her next British police procedural. She's been kicked off the highly prestigious Flying Squad and is now working out of a small station in a very expensive part of London. Most crime is of the petty sort, shoplifting purses that cost more than Jane will make in 3 years and things of that sort. She feels punished by the assignment. Nothing will happen that she could build a reputation on. Until it does.
Murder most foul visits the small and sleepy police station. The victim is a powerful businessman and agent. He has powerful friends and equally powerful enemies. The murder is a twisted tale, but there is something lurking in the background that has nothing to do with the murder and everything to do with Jane's time with the Flying Squad.
I enjoyed this dip in the past. We are up to about 1980 and women like Jane are still being passed over and seen as someone to fetch the coffee. After they've brought it, they are supposed to sit quietly and smile prettily and stay out of the way of the men. Jane fights that attitude. She makes some headway, but not as much as she'd like. I'm looking forward to Jane's next adventure.
