Thrilling, maybe for you?

I assume this must be part of another series. I'm kind of lost with what's going on...
Jane Tennison is a police officer. Seems like we might need to know some more backstory to really get a better feel for what's going on.
I'll check out earlier books to see if they seem clearer and more interesting though.
