As in previous Tennison books, we see Jane trying to break the mould by undergoing some firearms training. It was good to see that events in the previous book (which are referred to here) haven’t stopped her from wanting to progress in the police force, despite her being the wrong sex according to many of the other officers.

Lynda La Plante builds the story up nicely, setting the scene and the sort of crimes being investigated at her new station. It is a bit of a shock, therefore, when the brutality of the murder is revealed, the victim being viciously attacked. She also manages to pull at the heart strings with the revelation that the victim’s dog was with the body, even if he does make it difficult for the police to gather evidence from him!

We are also left with a bit of intrigue with regards to the victim’s business partner who shows no emotion when the death is revealed but, in private, breaks down. What was their true relationship and is he hiding something?

The book cover, with its shadowy background, adds to the intrigue, hinting that there are definitely secrets for Jane Tennison to uncover.
