Fast but oddly paced story

The story just jumps straight in: no small talk or details to set the scene, it just tells you what is happening and everything feels very fast but oddly paced. For example, Jane spends no time to ask Dabs if he was married (nothing leads up to the question and it seems very abrupt) but the author would detail every movement Dabs makes when they arrive at the Rifle Club (he gets out of the car, uses some keys, slides the door, returns to the car, enter the car park, park the car, slide the gate close, etc. you get the point). Also in chapter one Jane is learning how to shoot a gun and in chapter two it's her birthday dinner?! The change is so abrupt! I think the lack of details in some scenes and then the opposite abundant amount of details in (what I consider) less important scenes detracts the reading experience. I didn't finish the first look because I quickly lost interest and the story was hard to follow.
