My first impression of this book is that it has a well-controlled development that will lead up to the absorbing mystery that is building. Plus, I enjoyed the lighter backstory of Jane’s thirtieth birthday evening with her parents, and the varying tensions that were present, both due to her age, and the embarrassment of having one’s parents order a cupcake with a candle so the whole restaurant could join in in singing “Happy Birthday.” The opening pages of this book have left me wanting to read more and to keep being pulled further and further into the intrigue going on with Jane Tennison’s life and career. I think the cover is great, and I love the juxtaposition of all the colors, especially the way they’re arranged.
