Twisty YA fantasy murder mystery
3.5 stars for the unique setting, interesting mcs, and twisty murder mystery plot!
This book was a lot of fun! I loved the mysterious mood and historical setting. The world-building was on the more minimal side, but I understood enough to easily get through the book. Cat was a cool mc; I think she could've had some more growth/depth, but I liked her voice and her resilience. I wish we'd gotten more of her moon powers, but I'm sure that will be explored in the sequel.
Simon was a pretty good love interest; I appreciated how we got to know him without needing a POV from him. His dilemma as a sort of morally gray character was very interesting. The romance was solid too—it was nice to see Cat and Simon's relationship progress as they worked together.
The only thing I didn’t find myself really caring for was all the male side characters. Somehow, they were all in love with Cat, without any other memorable characteristics. Also, for the story, while I do love a good murder mystery, I felt like this one had maybe a few too many fake-out moments, leading to a slightly underwhelming ending.
