I really enjoyed this Erin Beatty's propulsive story and engaging prose, and especially her well-rounded characters! Caitrin is a great protagonist, and I found her romance with Simon sweet and believable. I'm not usually a fan of books about serial killers, but found the fantasy setting made it easier to process. The gothic atmosphere lent itself well to the murder mystery framework. I only wish the story hadn't included a love triangle: while Simon and Remi were both good characters individually, I felt like all three (including Cat) suffered from the inclusion of the love triangle in the story. I also though the magic system wasn't the most unique I have ever seen, but nonetheless found that is melded well into the narrative. I think if the love triangle had been removed and the characters aged up some this could have even been a compelling adult novel.
