Somehow I expected more from this novel. It’s pretty much a whodunnit in a fantasy world. But there’s a little bit of light romance which is a nice respite from the murder/mystery grind.

Blood and Moonlight is a slow read at the beginning. But if you’re patient and willing to ride out the wave past the 33% point, the pace does get quicker, and the plot does get interesting.

The world building is excellent and rightly so because of the time period that it’s set in. Beaty has done a fine job of detailing the township and the ornate Sanctum. It is unfortunate that the character development wasn’t as good as her world building construct.

The plot is straightforward and I didn’t encounter any twists or turns. The narrative is simple and yet still entertaining. Four stars.

I received a finished copy of the book from Farrar, Straus, Giroux through Bookish First. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
