I didn’t have high hopes for this novel because it reminded me of a few other YA fantasies. However, Blood and Moonlight was INCREDIBLE. I was instantly drawn in to Catrin’s world. I loved the combination of fantasy and mystery which kept pace throughout the book. Beaty’s writing is lyrical in some places while decidedly staccato in others. Though the ending was predictable I still enjoyed the story as it unfolded. There were some Victorian gothic vibes that really resonated with me (as that’s my favorite genre). Normally I go into YA fantasy with a pretense that the majority of the book will be spent on the magical system. Blood and Moonlight focused more on the mystery, however, which was actually a nice change of pace. I definitely recommend this one for lovers of V.E. Schwab or anyone who loves magical worlds that feature historical settings.
