I won this (and a few other arcs) and since I had just finished reading 'Daughter of the Pirate King' by the same author, I grabbed this one and quickly read it and finished it.
Eh.
It's not a bad book, it's not an AMAZING book either. It settles right in the middle. The problem I have with the book is that while it is full of character moments, the story just feels too simple for me and not much happens plot wise.
I get Willow vibes from it. You have a merc who is really pretty looking that falls in love with the female who is tall and a blacksmith. They (blacksmith, her sister, and the merc), along with a scholar with a bit of a secret, venture to find a way to destroy this sword that is able to read the secrets of any one that wields it. That bit, I must add, is a very interesting key thing. But not many people hold the sword and not many secrets are gained.
I just feel there needs to be stronger stakes. It did end with a calamity / cliffhanger so I am wondering if I should continue to book two. It's not a priority at the moment but if I do get my hands on the book as an ARC I wouldn't say no to reading it and completing the series.
