With magical realism and mystery intrertwined, this book is set in a small town in Appalachia, which is an area that is has some unique lore to it. Linden James and her 3 sisters, mom, and grandmother come from a line of others with small special "powers". Linden's ability to know what people are feeling can be both useful and isolating. I found the way she accesses her ability, by being able to taste people's emotions clever and interesting. This book will make you hungry! I enjoyed the descriptions of the food. I also liked the little notes and instructions at the beginning of the chapters.
The mystery element was well done. I did not guess who the perpetrator was. I thought Linden was well-developed, but her sisters development could use some work. Hopefully in the next book that will take place. They clearly have a strong family relationship. Overall, I found this book well-written and atmospheric, and although slow, I enjoyed it!
