I won't lie. I was really excited about this book. Unfortunately, after fifteen pages of what was supposed to be supernatural southern gothic, I am sad to say this book is not my thing. As someone who lives in the south, it is incredibly cringey how often these characters feel the need to remind the reader that they're in the south and it's hot. Like yes, of course it's hot, but those of us that actually live here don't give it conscious thought every other second. That, combined with the utterly ridiculous way this author wrote the southern drawl. Sure, insert 'y'all' wherever. We say it all the time. But we can know a character has a twang without actually dropping every g. It's jarring and pulls me right back out of the story every time this happens, which is often.
On the good side, some of these characters are interesting. Some of them. I'll finish eventually, but not yet.
