Bittersweet In The Hollow
Kate Pearsall

Buried deep in the small Appalachian town of Caball Hollow lies a secret. Mountain wisdom, folklore and superstition are entwined with the disappearance of a young woman. And the oppressive heat only adds to the anxiety and stress. The James women have ‘special gifts’. Main character Linden can taste what others are feeling even when belied by their spoken words.

The story begins as the annual Moth Festival approaches at summer equinox. Linden disappeared overnight at last summer’s festival. She has no memories of the incident, but she suffers from a terrible recurring nightmare. When another girl disappears and is found dead in the forest, Linden knows she must find what really happened! Could there be a murderer in their quiet community? Could it be the Moth Man of legend? Though terrified, she sets out to fund the truth!

A good Young Adult read. Emotions run high, old secrets are unearthed, fear sparks violence during this high schooler’s turbulent. magical, summer. The last 80 pages are packed full of revelations. I had to re-read that section to really understand how the town’s history and the present come together to complete the tale.

This author may appeal many readers. Do you like light magic fantasy of Sarah Addison Allen books? Do you like to be gently scared, but still be able to go to sleep? Are you interested in folklore and history? Then try out this new book!
