This excerpt, while it advances the story well, is also rich with the atmosphere of the Appalachians, where the story is set. The James family members are so well-developed as characters the reader feels as if they know them well. The action moves well and the reader is hooked long before reaching the end of the excerpt. This is a book I look forward to reading in full!
