Overall I thought this was a decent excerpt! I definitely enjoyed the very natural, old-timey magic system, as well as the particular powers each of the James girls had, and how that magic just feels like a part of daily life for them. I thought there was some pretty good mystery set up with what happened to Linden last summer for sure.
Still, just personally I wasn't very drawn in by this First look. Despite the mysteries, I wasn't really hooked in and wanting to read more, and I especially wasn't that drawn in by the characters themselves, especially when it feels like we didn't get very much of Linden's personality the way I'd like. Also, I just didn't really get the super rich, heady atmosphere of this little mountain town that I would've liked, especially with the spooky aspects of it. I felt like the atmosphere should'be been palpable, but it just didn't quite get there for me. Still, it was interesting enough and I did enjoy the Southern Gothic elements along with what I mentioned above!
