I didn’t know anything about British kids being sent to America before reading this book, so I was so interested in this view of the war. This book was so good for creating lots of discussion between readers because of the complexity of emotions that are present for each character. It's a quiet book packed with emotion. Bea was a kid when she was sent to live with a family in America during WWII, and the rest of the book was about this family and what happens with their lives. I liked how the story followed the characters over three different decades. It gave me a chance to decide who to root for and who maybe I had mixed feelings about. These characters were complex and explored in depth. I think it's a book that's going to grow on me the longer I sit with it. I’m still thinking about these characters and their situation. They made the best of what they were given and it was beautiful.
