Beatrix is caught between two worlds. When she is eleven, in the beginning of WWII, she is sent to America by her parents to wait out the war. Their hope is not only to allow her to be safe, but to enjoy her childhood, without the harshness of war that face her home in London. As the years pass, Beatrix is torn between her parents and hometown in London, and the new home and family she has found in America.

I really enjoyed the unique premise of this story. I have never before read a book from the perspective of the children sent away during the war, and then returning home. I really enjoyed getting to see the many points of view of the characters, but I did feel like it made it harder to get really drawn into the story. I kind of wish it would have stuck with Beatrix perspective more, and maybe reduced how many points of view there were. I also lost some of my interest when it skipped large amounts of time, or skipped over major events. I feel like it would have greatly increased the characters development and the readers interest, since this story is mainly character driven, to show those very emotional scenes.

Overall I enjoyed this story, but it did take me half the book to get invested in it. And then I felt like the story went into a very different direction and I felt like I was in a different story.
