Beyond That, The Sea by Laura Spence-Ash is a different kind of historical fiction! Initially this novel is set in the World War II era and though the historical background is there you are not subjected to extensive political details. Bea, the main character, is a child and the impact of the war on her life is from a child's viewpoint. The story then moves forward into the 60s and the historical influence on Bea's life is greater but still never overwhelming. Instead, the theme explores the impact on Bea's life of various events and people. You 'feel' Bea's struggle with relationships and emotions that evolved in the historical context of the story. One of my favorite aspects of this book is the short chapters with alternating point of views that keeps you abreast of each of the character's lives. Though the ending became obvious a bit too soon, I love the book and give it 5 stars. I highly recommend you read this book when it becomes available March 21st, 2023.
