During WWII, Beatrice was sent away from London to escape the constant bombing from German airships. Once in Boston she was welcomed into the Gregory family, especially by Mrs G., who always wanted a daughter. When the war ended, Bea was sent back home.
Beatrice is now 34 years old and living in London. Her time in Boston as a child is a lifetime ago, but Bea still finds herself haunted by the memories of her years with the Gregorys. Especially her connections to the two sons, William and Gerald.

This book was fascinating! It’s very character driven and follows a group of people through both extraordinary times and ordinary ones. I was intrigued by the idea of Bea being caught between two families, and in some ways two cultures, even years after the war has ended.

The characters in general were flawed, but very relatable. It was an enjoyable read.

Even though the novel includes 3rd person narrations from the viewpoint of nearly every character, the book felt like Bea’s story to me. She was the person I most connected with and felt the most invested in.
