This is a poignant wartime story, reading like a memoir. I love a well-written memoir, and this suits my taste to a 'T'.
The prologue is a bit disorienting with the changes in time and location and tends to slow the reading of the introductory pages. However, once I got oriented, the author's writing style and the hint of the story to come drew me further into the novel and it didn't take long to realize that one must pay attention to the dates provided.
The story is written in multiple points of view which can sometimes be confusing but, like the dates, the author elucidates the switches from one POV to another by naming the chapters accordingly. I rather like the handling of the different viewpoints. It creates a special empathy for each character. Such a stressful time in our history shared by different people, all with their own unique outlooks.
