It's 1940 in London, and as Germany prepares to attack, Millie and Reginald are sending their eleven-year-old daughter, Beatrix, to America to keep her safe. Bea is taken in by the Gregorys. She lives with them and their two sons in their Boston home. Bea quickly begins to fit into her new life in America. Just as Bea is settling into her new life, it's time for her to go back home. Once back in London, Bea has to figure out how to navigate the rest of her life without the Gregorys, despite the fact that they are still on her mind and in her heart.

Beyond that, the Sea is a moving, powerful, coming-of-age novel about a girl named Bea who is sent to America to keep her safe during WWII. This novel doesn't focus much on the war, but on the relationships between Bea and her London and American families.  I fell in love with every single character in this story and was deeply drawn into their lives. This is not a fast-paced, thrilling story, but rather a character-driven story. It's told in the third person POV from all the characters in this story, which really adds to the character building and depth of the story. If you love stories that take you on an emotional journey, then this one is definitely for you.
