BEYOND THAT, THE SEA is a lyrical and moving story about family, life, and loss. Beatrice is 11 when her parents decide to send her from London to America during WWII. She stays with the Gregorys and their sons, William and Gerald. The story is told from the perspectives of the different families, including her parents in London, and Bea herself over time, during and after the war.

The writing is absolutely consuming and feels softly lyrical, and it pulls you into the lives of these families. Over time, there is a lot of grief, loss, and love. Bea finds herself consumed by the new family while missing her parents, and she falls in love with them and who they are as well. After the war, things do not go back to the way they were, and all of their lives are forever changed.

Each perspective is given in a couple pages at a time, and it brings the reader into the individual emotions and points of view. The story becomes fuller because of it. Time changes us all, and these lives are forever altered by the war and Bea's journey. This story is really about family, love, and loss and the way lives change and move through time.

With lyrical writing and compelling characters, BEYOND THAT, THE SEA is a lovely and consuming historical fiction. Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.
