I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a historical fiction read that follows the characters through time. I found the story to be a quick read, at times a bit sad, with a solid conclusion.

In this story, readers follow a teenager sent from London to America (specifically New England) to be protected from the damage and danger of WWII bombing. Readers see her grow up and deal with her family(ies) both home and abroad. I appreciated that while the War is ever-present at the beginning of the story, it does not consume the plot and realistically illustrates how everyday life continues through extraordinary conditions.

This book is definitely for readers more interested in character development and interpersonal relationships than in plot, although there are the regular threads of life that propel the story forward. I found the characters to be fully-realized and with believable human flaws.
