Beyond That, The Sea is a historical novel about two families living in England and Massachusetts from the 1940’s to the 1970’s.

After Beatrix’s parents see her playing with a gas mask while bombs keep dropping over London the hard decision is made to send her to America for safety. After arriving In Massachusetts by ship Bea quickly bonds with Mr and Mrs G and their two sons William and Gerald. As the years pass it becomes harder and harder for Bea to remain connected to her family in London while she becomes so immeshed in the lives of the Gregory’s. But eventually World War 2 ends and Bea is sent back to a changed London. Over the next few decades there will be new relationships, losses, marriages and children as both the Gregorys and Bea try to move on with their lives.

Beyond That, The Sea is a character driven historical novel and despite more than thirty years passing there are not a lot of big page turning moments. Although this was well written and I appreciated the character building and historical detail I would have liked a little more action and kept waiting for something exciting to happen. I would recommend this to readers that enjoy more sprawling family sagas and don’t require a lot of heat, tension or drama.
