Beyond That, the Sea by Laura Spence-Ash tells the story of two families living on opposite sides of the Atlantic ocean during World War II. As bombs begin falling over London, Millie and Reginald Thompson make the difficult decision to send their eleven year old daughter, Beatrix, to live with an American family. During the years of war, Bea becomes a part of the American family, the Gregorys. At the end of the war, Bea returns to London, but the years spent in America, and her relationships with the family continue to impact the rest of her life.
This book drew me in from the very beginning with the description of her voyage across the ocean and arrival in America. This story spans decades from the Forties through the Sixties, and beautifully describes the relationships and emotions of the characters throughout the years. The chapters are told from multiple points of view and I think that this gives extra insight into all the characters. This book conveys the conflicting emotions that these families might have experienced during the war. I have always enjoyed books that are set during World War II and that was one of the reasons, I was so interested to read this story.

Thank you to Celadon and BookishFirst for the ARC of this book.
