When Celadon Books sent this to me, I didn’t feel confident I would like it, but I wanted to be fair to the author’s work so I gave it a try. I am completely shocked by how much I loved it!

It was really the words “historical romance” that turned me off. But this story leans into historical drama more so that romance, and that better suits my preferences.

The heart of this story isn’t even really WWII, although it’s the catalyst for Bea’s departure from England to live with the Gregory family in America. What the author really seems to explore here is the complicated relationships between parents and children and the incidents that can fracture or heal them.

Beyond That, the Sea was a beautiful and heartbreaking saga that never failed to hold my attention. I felt deeply for these nuanced characters, enjoyed seeing them grow over the years, and even rooted for the later blooming romance. If this story suited a skeptic like me, who’s to say who else will love it? Don’t pass it by, even if the genre is outside of your comfort zone!

I am immensely grateful to Celadon Books and Macmillan Audio for my copies. All opinions are my own.
