When World War II threatens their family and way of life in England, Beatrix's parents send her to America to protect her. She lives in the states with them and becomes a part of their family. The Gregorys have two boys and Bea is the only girl in their home. Her life is transformed and she becomes completely different from the young girl she was before she left home. I found the setting in Maine on the island to be mesmerizing and a place that really captures the feel of family and the everyday activities that make the Gregorys a unique family. At the same, Bea's mother is living with the pain of the separation from her daughter and suffering loss.
After the war, everything transitions back to the way it was and Bea is separated from the bonds with the "brothers" and her family while trying to bridge a relationship back with her mother after all of these years have passed.
