This book is about a young girl, Beatrice, who is sent from England to live in America to keep her safe during WWII. Though I read a lot of WWII historical fiction, this is the first book I have read on this topic. The book not only follows Bea's formative years where she lives completely separate from her biological family, but it also follows her return to England at the end of the war & the complicated relationship she has with both families for the rest of her life.

I really enjoyed this book. I cannot imagine leaving my country, friends, & family at 12 years old. Add to that moving in with a family that lives a completely different lifestyle, adapting to that lifestyle, & then abruptly being uprooted once again and sent home to England at the end of the war.

I thought all of the characters in the book were well-fleshed out with their own issues. Nothing was sugar-coated. There are some sad sections of the book that seemed a bit extreme to me, but the book reaches a satisfying conclusion.

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this book & I look forward to reading more by this author.
