Prior to picking up Spence-Ash's debut novel, BEYOND THAT, THE SEA, I didn't know that European children were sent to the U.S. during WWII. I felt the book's impact early on. There was a gut-wrenching scene when Beatrix and her parents were saying goodbye, and I cannot even fathom the courage it took to make such a painful decision. While set during the war (and after), the primary focus was on the characters themselves, experienced via eight unique points-of-view. I enjoyed the short chapters and the literary nature of the novel reminded me of ASK AGAIN, YES.

It's hard for me to pinpoint exactly why I didn't love this one, because I really wanted to! I got bogged down during the middle section and I didn't always appreciate the choices some of the characters made. Also, the dialogue was expressed via italics versus quotations, causing me to feel separated from the conversations happening (a personal gripe, not a true critique). That being said, I can understand so many readers enjoyed it. If you're thinking about picking it up, definitely check out some of the 5-star reviews! Many thanks to Celadon Books for the complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
