I enjoyed the story and found that it was a compelling historical novel spanning a number of decades encompassing World War Two and some decades after. The book had an interesting storyline connecting both England and the U.S. during World War 2. I opted to listen to the audiobook and while the narrator had a great voice and diction, I wouldn't necessarily recommend the medium to other readers. Unfortunately, the English narrator hadn't changed her accent for the periods of time set in the United States. She uniformly voiced all characters with a British accent, regardless of their citizenry. While reading those chapters, I found myself forgetting that they were on the U.S. East Coast instead of England.

Overall, I enjoyed the characters and thought that they were well-fleshed out. I also thought that it had a lovely ending. Yet, without spoiling anything, I would have loved to have felt that each character ended the story deeply satisfied. Maybe it's only my interpretation, but it seemed as if the main character was left feeling as if she ended up with her second choice in life. All the while, most readers will agree she ended up in the best place possible and with the best person.
