This book caught me off guard with the sweltering of emotions that this book immediately overwhelmed me with. The differing perspectives throughout were very effective and the kind of prologue that takes us into the story immediately catches your attention. Despite the historical nature of the work, we are immediately able to relate to the emotion turmoil that Beatrix is in, along with the other voices we hear as well. Each individual character brings their own twist of fate to the story and yet that doesn't make the story itself any less heartbreaking. If anything it makes it more so, especially when you consider the relationship between the individual characters, and how the goings on of this tale essentially twisted their fate.

Beatrix is immediately seen to emulate her father more then her mother, both seem to hang on to their fear of the war always putting on a brave face, but it is still evident here by the mere fact that she constantly carries the symbol of her fear with her. We see a budding relationship here with her mother too that is dramatically shattered by the war itself. Yet this leaves a hole for her american mother to easily fill.

It is immediately easy to fall into this book and once you do you will leave it with your heart bleeding.
