I am a fan of historical fiction and the sneak peek of "beyond that, the sea" by Laura Spence-Ash certainly did not disappoint! From the Prologue through the beginning of Part One, the novel was interesting and had me, the reader, intrigued. I also liked how Ms. Spence-Ash devoted chapters to a particular character. The main character, eleven-year-old Beatrix, is shipped from London to Boston by her family. World War II is raging and her family fears for her life. Their hope is that she will remain safe in America. Reginald and Millie Thompson are Beatrix's parents. They are at odds with one another regarding sending Beatrix away. Beatrix is under the impression that it was her mother's idea (which is false, her father was the one pushing to send Beatrix away. Her mother wanted her to stay). Due to this belief, Beatrix is resentful towards her mother. The other character introduced thus far is Nancy. She is the mother of the Boston family where Beatrix is staying. Nancy has only raised boys and is concerned about her ability to raise a "daughter".
Ms. Spence-Ash is definitely and talented writer. I found the sneak peek to be a real "page turner". I'm looking forward to reading the remainder of this great novel!
