The opening scenes are beautiful as I felt like I could taste the sea at one point.
However, I have a very hard time being drawn in to period pieces due to their slower starts. This was like that, but I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I think those who love period novels will be drawn in by how descriptive the world is.
