“Being Henry: The Fonz…and beyond” is a delightful new memoir by Henry Winkler. The memoir covers his childhood through the present day.

I really enjoyed this book. I’ve been a fan of Henry Winkler since the Happy Days days, and he tells a great many fun stories from that time. He even addresses the infamous “jump the shark” moment. The memoir is written in such a conversational tone that I felt as though Henry was in my living room, chatting with me over dinner. Stacey, his wife, also contributes to parts of the memoir by commenting on some of the couple’s life experiences.

Henry also is extremely honest about his difficult childhood, his struggles with dyslexia, (he was not diagnosed until age 34!), and his ongoing problems with his insecurity and lack of self awareness, which he has just recently conquered. Along the way, the reader gets a glimpse into the inner workings of Hollywood and the ups and downs of a long career, not to mention a look at a celebrity who is flawed yet lovable. One of my favorite sections concerned the writing of the Hank Zipser series of books, about a boy with dyslexia. And now I want to read the Hank Zipser books.

I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys celebrity memoirs, or anyone who loves a good story.
