When I was in middle school, I read The Outsiders, and it was definitely one of the first classics I read that I enjoyed. I've always wanted to see a female version of the story, and I was so excited to jump straight into this rendition of the iconic YA novel. It was even better when I realized that it wasn't a disappointment! I'm already very partial to Houston since it is the city I grew up next to, so I loved getting to see my city in their reworked 60s era. A lot has changed since then, and the characters definitely show a side to this city that most people don't know about.
Overall, I think reimagining classics is a bit like a Catch-22 (lol lit reference) because it's a huge undertaking in terms of confidence and living up to the source material. I feel like it should have been marketed as an Outsiders meets blah blah because the reimagining led me to believe it would follow a similar trajectory as the first. When it didn't, I just felt disconnected and like this was a wholly unique story, which on its own is great!
