This is a thorough and compelling account of a witness who went above and beyond to report the misconduct of a doctor and the investigation this sparked into USC’s medical school. The misconduct of the school’s dean revealed by the persistent witness eventually led investigative journalists at the LA Times to uncover rampant corruption and coverups at USC, the worst of which was a doctor guilty of sexually abusing patients. This book takes you through the investigative process of the journalists that investigated USC and discovered a university gynecologist guilty of sexually abusing patients at USC for decades. This ultimately led to a Pulitzer and the arrest and prosecution of the gynecologist, who is currently on trial. While this is not normally my favorite genre, this account is compelling, informative, easy to follow, and riveting. It’s not boring and the just the investigative story, plain and simple without frills or excess. Like all great books about investigative journalism, it reminds you of the power and importance of the free press to ensure accountability, bring the truth to light, and (on a good day) bring the guilty to justice.
