The prologue and the first three chapters do a very nice job of hooking you. Something has definitely gone off the tracts in the prologue. We are then moved to an elite academy where we meet Ceo, the rich kid in charge, Grahame, he is somewhat undefined but he's bringing an axe which can't be good, and finally Colin, the good one. They are heading to Yosemite for a long weekend off campus and against the Academy policy.

An odd assortment of characters to this point. Lots of things being hidden by Grahame and Ceo, why the axe, why isn't the fourth member joining them. There is also defiance within the group, Grahame buying donuts that Ceo hates is a clue.

Not real sure of part of the book blurb. The time of the book puts it somewhere between mid October to Mid April. Not a great time to be hiking in Yosemite. There is also a fire. A tad unusual. The cover seems to reflect this, snow covered ground and what appears to be a raging fire. A minor thing but worth mentioning.

So, from the prologue thru the first three chapters, all is good to read further.

I rate this right down the middle, 3 stars. A place that leaves room to flesh out the book or to crash and burn. Let's see where Stephen Wallenfels takes us.
