Lacks Originality

I struggled with continuing to read what threatened to be another tired cliche. The book starts out with a prologue that attempts to hook the reader by telling a scary story and forecasting the upcoming danger. Obviously, the author feels the reader will not be able to stop reading. This is a hackneyed ploy, overused in today's market. Throwing a "scary" scene immediately when I don't know who the characters and whether or not I care two hoots about them will not guarantee my continued interest. Rather, the opposite may happen.
