So picture the sixty-year-old woman in the orange jumpsuit, the black wig, the white Stetson, the beer in one hand, cigarette in the other. Now listen to the irrepressible laughter. Poldi is not a woman politely sniffing around with a magnifying glass. She is a force to be reckoned with. A woman who has lived a lot and “knows a thing or two” about lots of different things. Everyone loves to be in her company and you will too.
Poldi has a dog and a nephew who live with her in Sicily, but her busy life leaves her little time to worry about their misadventures. She has plenty of her own. She is a widow and she misses her husband and fights off depression occasionally, but shall we say, she has no “fear of flying.” Mario Giordano has created a charismatic protagonist who is as intriguing as the mystery she is racing to solve.
The story is told by Poldi’s nephew, who is recounting what she told him. Poldi’s discovery of her murdered handyman is what leads her to sleuthing. A hunk of a man, a commissario assigned to work the case finds Poldi already pursuing leads. This state policeman appeals to her (as do all police in uniforms) and she sets her cap for him. Or should we say her bodice? Poldi’s motto is “When in doubt, show more cleavage!” This novel has satisfying twists and turns as the case is unraveled. The setting is sumptuous and magnetic and Poldi’s witty insights fall like jewels in your lap as you read. Don’t miss this one! I look forward to more Auntie Poldi books, they are delightful and supremely entertaining.
