This is a part of my quest to go back through and hit all the old books in an effort to garner more points to use on free books. In so doing, I download a bunch of the excerpts, slap them on the nook, and then later, offline, read through them and make notes, only to come back here to write those up at a later point.
The blurb provided on Bookish First doesn't appear to be in alignment at all with the excerpt provided in the first look preview. The blurb makes the book sound funny and engaging, just a jump to the left of a cozy mystery - i.e. it's got sex but still uses an amateur sleuth. I'm down for cozies, and for mysteries in general, so in spite of the seeming focus on sex, it had my interest. The excerpt, on the other hand, did not. It had a weird outline thing going on at the beginning of the chapter that seemed to just throw the story off altogether. It had a poor approach to trying to build the character, no hook, and a heavy reliance on cliches for attempted character development. Now, all those are definite negatives, but I'm hoping that the weird excerpt wasn't the final format for the book, so, with a bit more research, I may see that this is one that I am willing to get - used if nothing else- or it may be one where my initial first impressions of the writing remain true and I ignore it completely. As a result, I'm going with the neutral middle ground on the star rating because there just wasn't enough information to make a clear distinction.
