What would you wish for if you knew it would come true?
Eldon is stuck in a hot depressing and very sandy desert in a small town. Everyone in town makes a wish on their eighteenth birthday and it comes true. As Eldon gets closer to his wish day, he struggles with making a wish. He talks to many adults in town to figure out why they chose their wish, if they are satisfied with the results, and what does that mean for him. The wishes of many years range from life-changing to regrettable to superficial.
The writing really created the mood and feeling of this depressing and desperate town. The plot was slow at times, but then took a few unexpected turns to make the story intriguing. Characters were colorful and believable; teenagers do not always make the best choices or look at the big picture when looking at the future. The ideas behind the plot would make interesting book club discussions...
