This Young Adult book's premise is that there is a small town in Nevada where on their eighteenth birthday residents get to make a wish that is guaranteed to be granted. There are rules and consequences to these wishes, and this book has a dark essence to it. The premise was fascinating and I was interested in discovering what the main character and narrator, Eldon, would wish for on his approaching Wish Day.

This was told from the first person perspective, and Eldon was often obnoxious and unlikeable. However, as the story unfolds his perspective and actions become understandable. I was okay with his flawed character.

This was written in a unique style that really worked for this story. The chapters were mostly based on the countdown days to Eldon's upcoming Wish Day, with chapters interspersed throughout highlighting different townspeople and their specific wishes that they made. I did find some of the subplots a bit unnecessary or odd, including one that dealt with a character's interest in the LDS religion.

One thing I particularly enjoyed about this book was the setting. Nevada is my home state and it was delightful to read an accurate representation of the area, although the town itself is fictional. The bottom line is this was a book that both kept my interest and made me think.
