I felt angry that I was only going to get 35 pages of this book in an excerpt, so I take that as a good sign. The beginning of As You Wish has me hooked. The concept, that every person in the town gets to make a wish on their 18th birthday and that that wish can either change their life for good or for bad depending on wording is definitely a newer idea. I left this excerpt wanting to know more—what did Eldon’s mom wish for? What is wrong with his sister? What is the ceremony like?

I can see this book (at least the excerpt I read) as being a high interest novel for struggling readers in a classroom. I think the ideas of cause and effect are going to be emphasized pretty heavily, and it might create a great opportunity to discuss those ideas in a more tangible way than with other pieces. I like this book!
