From the very beginning we are getting the story from the perspective of Eldon. He is a very annoying character. He has some moments, like when he thinks about his little sister, where he isn't such a deplorable person but otherwise I disliked him entirely.
The plot on the other hand, that is what saved this book for me. Can you imagine getting 1 wish on your 18th birthday? Any one wish? What would you wish for? I think most of us would say MONEY, I know I probably would. But what if you have a sick loved one? When you are 18, I don't think you are equipped to make such a huge decision so most of those wishes are squandered.
