Initial impressions: main protagonist is rough around the edges/one of those teen boys who deflects with sarcasm when the world gets too personal and threatens to reveal his vulnerabilities. At the beginning of the book he's dealing with a heart break; there's lots of adolescent angst and as we come to find out, so much more.
He has to navigate grief, parental expectations, and discovering his own identity.
Although he annoyed me at times, I did identify with the mistakes one makes in adolescence and the desire to rectify those mistakes. I became invested with the main character and was happy to see his growth in the end.
Interesting coming of age story with a little magical realism thrown in.
