Wow, this book blew me away by the intenseness of it all. So first things first, I thought that this book would be told exclusively in Pauline’s perspective but that was not the case. You actually follow all of the girls in the family including Pauline so there is definitely a richer sense of perception and character development.

This is a book where you simply savor everything about it as well as consume it in a leisurely manner. It is definitely not a book where you can devour in a short sitting. It took me a few days to finish this book because there were just so much to absorb from the anticipation of the family after moving to a city to the devastation that they felt during the Plague and then ultimately the hopefulness that they all experienced as they each started to move on with their lives in their own ways.

My favorite character would definitely be Maggie, the middle child. Her voice was the most complex, I think. For her, I think she dealt with the most change and was somehow the most grown up in a lot of situations. She was only about 11 years old when disaster struck and yet somehow she dealt with death the best. The reason why I found her the most mature out of the three sisters was that she was most in tune with her emotions – she understood and accepted the concept of death a lot better than her sisters and she was also the first to fall in love with someone at the tender age of 11. I honestly thought that it was a childhood crush but she completely proved me wrong in the how deep that love actually was. It was quite refreshing.

While I enjoyed reading about Maggie the most, I still enjoyed reading about the other two sisters’ perspective, Evelyn and Willa. They brought their own perceptive which I enjoyed because Evelyn was the eldest, the smartest and the most level-headed whereas Willa was the baby and she brought that innocence and sense of naiveté in the book.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it’s actually a great read for winter because it really made me want to snuggle up and read this book with a nice cup of hot chocolate.
