This novel tells the story of one family’s journey to Philadelphia in the early 1900’s during the Spanish flu outbreak. The story is narrated by the mother, who just lost her baby son. You can feel the emotions she goes through, particularly in making the decision to leave the only home he ever knew.

The writing is vivid and heart wrenching. I felt the pain of a mother who lost her only son. Some details seemed overdone at first, but after learning her style, I was able to accept that these details are a part of her strategy to get us to feel more connected to the story. My heart ached with her at the loss of the baby. I can’t imagine the loss these people felt during these times but the writer did a great job of helping me understand the pain.
