The beginning of this story finds the main character, Pauline, sitting beside the grave of her infant son. The death of her son has been the impetus for a major change in her life, as she has agreed that her husband shall accept his uncle's offer to join him in his mortuary business in Philadelphia. It is very evident to the reader that the death of her son has had a great impact on Pauline, she seems not to care whether or not she lives or dies.
