I was drawn to this book by the cover, and took advantage of the opportunity to read the brief excerpt. I have recently become a fan of historical fiction, a genre I never paid attention to in the past. I like the way I can learn about history by reading a well-written novel about the people who may have lived during that time period.
The book begins with a mother marveling over the beauty of her newborn son--a first for a family with daughters. The entire family experiences the joy of this moment; however, from reading the cover, you know that painful times are in store for them. The Spanish flu epidemic is on the horizon.
With this excerpt, the author did a very nice job of drawing me into the story.
